Gill’s latest hundred also continued an exceptional ODI run in 2026. His scores this year now read 56, 56, 23, 84*, 154, 80*, 31, 77 and 110. Across those nine innings, he has accumulated 674 runs, including two centuries and seven scores of fifty or more.

What stood out in Thiruvananthapuram was the balance between patience and scoring intent. Gill did not need to attack every delivery because India had started the chase positively, but whenever West Indies offered width or overpitched, he was quick to find the boundary.

Before the match, the conversation was not centred on another hundred. It was about whether the India captain would be completely comfortable after taking a blow to his elbow in training.
