Hayley Matthews produced a magnificent 182 off 156 balls against Zimbabwe Women in the first ODI at Harare Sports Club, delivering one of the biggest innings of her international career. No. Hayley Matthews’ 182 is not the highest individual score in Women’s ODI history.

That world record belongs to New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr, who scored 232 not out against Ireland Women in Dublin in 2018. Kerr was only 17 at the time and her unbeaten double-century remains the highest individual innings in Women’s ODI cricket.

Before Kerr, Australia’s Belinda Clark had held the record with her famous 229 not out against Denmark at the 1997 Women’s World Cup.

So Matthews did not break the overall Women’s ODI record in Harare, but she did establish something significant of her own: the highest ODI score of her career.

How Far Was Matthews From Amelia Kerr’s World Record?

Matthews finished on 182, leaving her 50 runs short of Kerr’s 232*.

That sounds like a sizeable difference, but Matthews’ innings still belongs in the conversation around exceptionally large Women’s ODI scores. Reaching 180 requires a batter not only to score quickly but also to remain at the crease for almost an entire innings.

Matthews did exactly that. She was the sixth West Indies wicket to fall and was dismissed with only three deliveries remaining in the innings.
